A Tribute to Bentley and his family

Just like people, we know the pups that come through our doors can’t live forever but that doesn’t make it any easier when they make their way over the rainbow bridge. Our hearts break for the wonderful people who came forward and adopted each pup, making sure the days they do have on Earth are as happy as they can possibly be. In this post, we honor Bentley, an MHGSPR alum who sadly passed on, and the loving family he left behind.

What a sad day for Kevin and Pam who stepped up to foster and then adopt one of our senior dogs, Bentley. Bentley was a stray who ended up in a local shelter where he was confused, lonely and terrified, barking and crying much of the time. Kevin saw him on our Facebook page and immediately said he wanted this distinguished, handsome boy. Oh, what a life Bentley walked into.  Two other canine buddies , one a GSP, the other a lab and four mischievous cats. He took walks and romps every day in the meadows and woods around his home. He loved snuggling on the bed with his mom and dad and his 4-legged housemates, watching the Bronco games with his family, sleeping in the bed with his head on a pillow, covered to stay cozy. Life was so good with Kevin and Pam.

A few days ago, during their morning walk, the dogs scouted the woods and Bentley got on a scent. He could not hear or see well but what a nose he had. His buddy Maxwell returned but he did not. Kevin and Maxwell jumped in the truck to look for him.

In Kevin’s words, “It is with broken hearts that we have to tell you we lost Bentley today due to a sudden accident.” The sheriff and animal control had been looking for other dogs in the area and discovered him just minutes after he had been hit and killed instantly. Kevin and Maxwell arrived on the scene to pick up Bentley and prepare him to cross over.

Bentley was one of those lovely, gentle, soulful GSPs who you just can’t forget once you’ve met him. He was still running and romping at 12 years old.  Bentley loved his new family as much as they adored him.  The last 10 months of his life were a dream come true for Bentley. How tragic that his dream ended so abruptly and much too soon.

Bentley5There’s really no consolation for losing a dog in this way. But we do feel quite sure that Bentley is still running and playing in meadows and woods with a lot of other GSPs and that he has found a pillow to lay his head on. And if that Rainbow Bridge is out there or in there or somewhere, he will be with Kevin and Pam again.
