Maggie – Adopted
Remember me? I’m ABBY (now Maggie), a GSP mix about 2-3 years-old. When I came into the
rescue, I had heartworm so I had to be with a foster who could care for me. But after three
months of treatment, I’m completely clear. And shortly after my treatment, I was spayed so I’m
all ready to be adopted now.
My foster mom has learned much more about me than when I first came so here’s the latest.
One of the most important things to know about me is that I love spending most of my days
outside, running through our big yard, stalking squirrels, and chasing or being chased by
another dog if he or she will follow my lead. If one of my buddies is busy or wants to ignore me,
I just squeal to get their attention. I sure like having other dogs to run with but I can spend
hours outside on my own, too. My foster home now has 4 other GSPs but they are all older
than 8 years so they really don’t want to spend much time actually playing with me. We all like
to be in the backyard together but I really want a young dog buddy who will play with me. We
have a lot of dogs coming to our house and I always have so much fun with them. I have gotten
along with every dog I’ve ever met. Because I love being in the back yard so much, I will need a
6 ft. privacy fence or, if you live on property, I would need a training collar. I have climbed a 5 ft
wire fence so that is not enough to keep me safe.
Although I love being outdoors, I am not the best leash-walker. I can do it but I am not happy on
a leash. I have been known to chew a leash in half and I do it pretty fast. My foster mom uses a
chain leash so I can’t chew it unless I have access to the other end of the leash, the part you
hold. I’m OK going to the vet on a leash probably because I don’t have to be leashed for very
long. And I want to meet every person and dog who is also there.
Although I love, love, love being outside, I also like to come back inside throughout the day to
check on my foster mom and any dogs that are inside. I follow her around when I spend time
inside but I can come and go as I want to because we have a dog door so I am in and outside all
day long. I am completely housebroken (only one accident in the very first week) and I can be
loose in the house anytime so I am never crated. My foster mother tried that once just to see
how I would do. I was a failure because I hate that confinement. So, when my foster mom
leaves, I am fine, no separation anxiety, no damage but that’s probably because I always have
at least one other dog home with me. I either take a short nap on the couch or, more often, just
watch out the picture window that looks out to the backyard. And then I race outside to find
what I had just seen in a tree, probably a squirrel Or (surprise!), I am outside stalking critters
and running with at least one of the other dogs. I do need more work on my commands but I’m
pretty good with come, sit, and down as long as I’m not being distracted by movement in the
back yard! And I still need work to not jump up on someone. It’s just that I’m so excited to see
people, especially my foster mom.
At night, crashing on the couch with my foster mom and most of the other dogs is such a great
way to end the day. I love the closeness of all of us cuddled up together watching TV. But
bedtime is the very best. All of us sleep on mom’s king-sized bed with her. The coziest snuggling
I’ve ever experienced. Heaven.
I sure love being with people, especially my foster mom. So I hope I can be in a family that
wants to spend lots of time with me and let me snuggle and cuddle with them at the end of the
day. I’m pretty sure I would be fine with kids, too, although maybe not really little ones
because I’m very strong for a 42lb pup. And I have a LOT of energy! I really need a family who
has a very large, safe yard and will let me spend much of my time outside. And, maybe most
important, having another young, very energetic canine buddy to play and run with would
make me the very happiest girl.
