Birdie – Adopted!
I’m Birdie and I’m so glad you’ve come here to learn all about me. As you can probably tell, I’m a purebred German Shorthaired Pointer and I’m about 2-3 years old. Right now I am with my family who are pretty fond of me and really enjoy me but have realized that they don’t have the kind of time GSPs require for exercise and attention so they want me to have a family who understands the needs of my energetic breed. I respond to some basic commands like sit, down and off but I will need some more training and practice with come and stay. I also know “leave it”(“pfui” in German) In fact, my trainer has encouraged my mom and dad to give me my commands in German. When they walk me, they use a gentle leader and a no-pull harness because I do pull. Again, training! But that’s really good because my dad says I am “incredibly trainable.” I am house broken but I am not crate trained so I have the run of the house, even when my mom and dad are gone for work. I usually hang out in the living room during the day. I don’t love being at home by myself and I can get stressed all alone so I find things to do. I especially like scavenger hunts! I don’t destroy objects like shoes or pieces of clothing but I do like moving things around. My mom and dad think it’s pretty funny since I don’t chew or destroy things. They just aren’t always sure where I’ve relocated their things! But I have been known to get into the trash. When my mom and dad are at home, I’m great having the run of the house and at night I sleep on my dog bed or on the couch.
What do you suppose is my favorite thing to do? If you know GSPs you would probably know: RUN and then RUN more and more. I don’t care a lot about playing fetch. I’ll do it but I get pretty bored rather quickly. Maybe because I have so much energy, I would much rather be running. So it will be really important for my new family to want to take me hiking, trail running and field training. It appears that I have a very high prey drive because I want to chase small furry things all the time. I haven’t been hunt trained but it’s possible I would love that. So, cats? I probably should not have the opportunity to be very close to one . . . prey! I’m fine with other dogs but I’m just not too interested in them. In fact, I sometimes just run away from them. But if a dog pesters me for a while, especially if I’m on a leash, I can become stressed and annoyed. Even though I’m a pretty independent pup, I like being with people and kids.
When my mom and dad talk about me they say I’m a kind and very sweet girl who is gentle and tolerant. But they are quick to add that I have so much energy that I need a family who has the time to spend with me and will continue training me and take me running every day for at least an hour. I shouldn’t be in a family who doesn’t make me a priority in their lives, who only pats me on the head and doesn’t pay a lot of attention to me. I’m an adventurous, friendly, playful pup who wants her people around and who needs lots of opportunities to get rid of the enormous energy that GSPs typically have. I can’t help it . . . it’s my breed!
