Duck – ADOPTED!
Hi! My name is Duck and I’m a purebred GSP around 6 years old. I was strictly a kenneled hunting dog until a few months ago when my parents rescued me after I was being given away on Craigslist. Since I went for so long without a real family, I am one of the most loving dogs ever and am drawn to any human around. Being on their lap is my absolute favorite. I am pretty new to being a housedog, but I’ve done extremely well and continue to improve. I am house trained, but a few times I’ve had an accident in the house if I was too excited. I am somewhat of a hammerhead inside when I follow my humans since I always want to be close to them and know what they’re doing, but I also enjoy long naps in my kennel or on a dog bed. After joining a family and seeing what love is like, I do have some separation anxiety so I am in my kennel when my mom and dad are gone so I won’t nervously do things like get in the trash. I know the commands off, lie down, release, hunt it up, and stay. I’m not a big fan of sitting on command yet, as it still feels awkward to me since my hunting stance is so stalky.
I am not leash-trained, but I do well learning new things with some work. I am, however, e-collar trained, but if I’m not within eyesight of my humans, I will immediately take off to hunt with my nose and be gone. I really need a house with a privacy fence so I’m not tempted to run off to hunt since that was my only job for so long when out of my kennel.
My parents have 2 Labs as well as multiple doggy friends that often visit our home, and I’ve done well with every single dog I’ve been around. I’m still learning to play with other dogs and don’t get how to participate yet, but I get excited just watching and like to be close by. I also tend to follow my Lab sisters all around our yard and imitate them when they hunt for squirrels.
I may do fine as an only dog, since my love for people is so great, but I really love to be a part of a pack and have other dogs to follow around. I am great with kids and curious about cats but I leave them alone. I used to sleep in my kennel and am comfortable still being in it at night, but usually I sleep on a twin bed on my parents’ floor just for the dogs. My ideal place to sleep is my parents’ bed, but with a lot of dogs that gets too crowded so I am respectful of the word “stay” and sleep great in the doggy twin bed at night. My parents have worked a lot with me in showing me how to be a housedog and part of a loving family, so I need someone to reinforce my training and continue working with me.
I also would do best with a hunter who can take me back out to work since I will always love what I was trained so hard to do. I have a great point and I respect other dogs when they point. I am also great at flushing and retrieving. My favorite birds are quail and pheasant but I never let a dove or chucker get by me! I really don’t want to return to having to live in a kennel or outside which some serious hunters do with their dogs. I love being with my family and thrive on their attention and affection. People often comment to my parents what a loving dog I am, and that’s all I really want to do. If you let me be a real part of your family, I’ll be the happiest working dog in the world.
