Fitz – Adopted!
I’m Fitz, a purebred GSP about 8-9 years old. I still have plenty of energy so don’t think that I’m an old dog who just lies around. I really like going for walks and runs with my foster brother, too. But since I’m an older pup I do love to spend some of my time on the couch and on the bed. I live with another male GSP who is just about my age and we get along great; in fact, I get along with every dog I’ve met. But cats? No way, unless you want me to hunt them! Even though I really like being with other dogs, I’m pretty independent, too. I like to play fetch with a tennis ball and love to tug and chew on rope toys. But I really like being with people, too, including kids, and with my foster mom I am super affectionate. I just love being close to her so she calls me her shadow. But that’s no so unusual. A lot of people refer to GSPs as Velcro dogs and that would be me!
Of course, I’m house-trained and I’ve never needed a crate although I am crate-trained. I know a few basic commands – sit and come – but my owners and now my foster mom are wondering if I might be a little hard of hearing. Either that or I ignore their commands sometimes! Leash walking is kind of hit and miss with me. Sometimes I’m responsive but not always. My family used a harness and that worked pretty well. Since my foster mom isn’t sure about my hearing (or selective hearing?) she says I should be on a harness or leash when we go out on hikes or runs and she uses a pinch collar when we go out on trails. I love going on hikes!
Now here’s something you can’t say about every GSP: I like going into the shower with my foster mom to get bathed. Remember, I like being with her! And I’ll let her clip my toenails afterwards . . . no problem!
When it’s bedtime I like to hop up on the bed. My foster mom says I will try to monopolize the pillows but I’m fine if she tells me to move to the foot of the bed. And sometimes I like sleeping on my dog bed, instead.
I am a counter-surfer so be sure you put ANY food away when I’m around. Apparently, I’m pretty smart because I can open doors if I’m tested. I watched my foster mom put a bag of rawhides in a low-level drawer and later I went back and opened the drawer and paraded through the house to show her how clever I am!
My owners were pretty sad when they had to surrender me so, of course, they want me to have a home that will give me lots of love and attention. When they described me to the rescue they said they love my kindness and loyalty and feel that my sweet nature will make the right family very happy to have me as one of their own.
