Jack – ADOPTED!
Finally, I get to be on the rescue’s website! I’m Jack, a 5-1/2 year-old Pointer and I’ve been here since April. I came to the rescue from Oklahoma after being diagnosed with heartworm. Thank heaven the rescue wanted to help me so they brought me to Colorado where they could have me treated and keep a close eye on me during treatment which meant no exercise at all. Can you imagine, a Pointer not being able to run and get all the exercise he needs?? But my very kind foster mom has taken great care of me, making me follow the rules for heartworm treatment and care.
And then yesterday (mid July) I got the thumbs up that I’m done with all the restrictions and it’s OK for me to be a Pointer again! What a happy boy I am!!
My foster mom says I am one of the most patient dogs she has ever met. I sit by the door outside for a long time just waiting to be let in. She also bathes me sometimes and says that I just patiently stand for her to wash and rinse me. When I came into the rescue I wasn’t housebroken at all but my foster mom has been working with me and I’m doing so well. Now I walk over to the door, asking to go outside. And I’ll go back and ask again if she doesn’t respond. Like she has said: I am patient!
I still need to work on my commands though we’re making progress on those, too. But I am pretty good about walking on a leash. I was just allowed to go to the dog park for the first time and that was fun! I liked being with other dogs in Oklahoma so I think the dog park will be one of my favorite places. I am crate trained but I don’t use a crate except at night and the only reason I sleep in a crate now is because there’s this cat! My foster mom just doesn’t want any skirmishes. We’ve actually been in the same room together, even under the bed together but I don’t think she totally trusts me with the cat yet.
Being with people is my very favorite pastime. Honestly, I want snuggles from just about everyone I meet. I haven’t been around children yet but my foster mom thinks I would love them although probably not really little kids because my exuberance might knock them over. But I especially love sitting on the sofa with my foster mom. She says I am one of the snuggliest dogs she’s ever known. It feels so good when she cuddles and pets me and scratches my ears. I really like burying my head in her lap to get close and I love being held.
Because I’ve just been sprung free from heartworm exercise restrictions, I haven’t had an opportunity to run free so I don’t know yet how much off leash exercise I will want or need. My new heart worm-free life has just begun and I’m a boy who can hardly wait to have the life of an active Pointer.
