Lucas – ADOPTED!
(Bio updated 7-17-16)
What can I say? I’m adorable! At least that’s what everyone tells me. My name is Lucas (my foster mom and her friends call me Lukie) and I recently turned one year old. The rescue thinks I’m probably a German Shorthaired Pointer mix but when you look at me it’s kind of hard to tell, especially if I’m pointing! I am current on all my shots and in excellent health! They call me a “pocket” pointer because I’m smaller than breed standards, weighing only 37 lbs. But that’s OK because GREAT things come in small packages!
Let me tell you about myself. I am house trained and know my basic commands. I am VERY smart and pick up commands quickly. I was recently taught “bang,” to roll over dead, in 2 short training sessions! I am not destructive when left alone but I still love to chew, so my foster mom makes sure there are lots of toys to chew on but only ultra hard toys like the black Kong or rope toys. I sleep through the night either on a dog bed or on the bed with my foster mom. I tolerate a crate but I’m rarely crated (only to eat).
My foster mom tells me that I am a HUGE love bug and I love following her around when she’s home. I am very much a lap dog so being small is a huge advantage! But it’s also great being able to go in and outside all day long using the doggie door.
I also love to play so I will do best in a house with a younger dog, especially a female who likes to play as much as I do. I get along great with the dogs in my foster family, 2 females and a male, but since I’m still learning my place in a pack I’m not as comfortable and secure with the other male, a large GSP who is part of the pack, too. That will change as I mature and gain more confidence with my owner/leader.
I am not around kids in my foster home so because I’m so rambunctious and because a lot of kids don’t always remember what their parents tell them about being with a dog, I shouldn’t be in a family with kids under 7 or 8. Generally, when I meet new grownups, I tend to be shy in the beginning, but it takes me no time to warm up to them. We don’t have cats in my foster home, either, but considering that I have a strong prey drive (I love chasing rabbits and I’m very tuned in to birds), I should probably be in a home with no cats.
I’m still a puppy so, of course, I am full of energy. I will need a yard with a 6-foot fence (you should see how high I can jump!) as well as almost daily off-leash runs wearing an e-collar to get rid of some of my energy. I still need some training walking on a leash, but remember how smart I am. My foster mom says I’m making good progress so I’m sure it won’t take me long to be leash trained as long as I get consistent training. My foster mom thinks I’m pretty wonderful boy and she would like to keep me but she knows I deserve to have my very own home with a family who will keep on training me, provide almost daily rigorous exercise, be as affectionate with me as I will be with them and who will love me a lot!
