Penelope – ADOPTED!
When Penelope found herself dumped at a Colorado shelter in October, she was sporting a volleyball sized mass in her nether regions and a view other lumps and bumps. She waited and waited but nobody came
Didn’t she matter any more?
Julia Corrin spotted her heartbreaking shelter intake photo. We saw a sweet girl in need and we stepped up and said YES to helping her. How could we resist her adorable frosted face?
Shelter staff made sure to keep her off the euthanasia list once her stray hold expired as they knew she was very much wanted. Shelter veterinary staff removed the unsightly 4lb melon mass last week and they kept a close eye on her as she recovered from the operation. After a month living in a kennel, she had become rather sad and lost her appetite, despite the staff taking great care of her.
Judy and Penelope’s foster mama Julia went to collect Penelope from the shelter on Tuesday 11/17. Once in her foster mama’s car, she said “ Woohoo, get me out of here!”. She is thrilled to be in a home again and has settled in beautifully with her foster family.
Penelope is a model GSP; she has impeccable manners with dogs, cats and kids. We switched out her cumbersome plastic cone for a comfy inflatable collar to stop her plowing into everything. She really loves her new bagel bed and happily sleeps in her puppy pen when mama is at work.
This girl is an enthusiastic foodie who enjoys 3 protein packed meals and various tasty snacks a day. We are trying hard to build her up after she lost vital weight/muscle tone at the shelter.
Prognosis and care:
Penelope is approximately 10 years old. Preliminary lab results state that the mass was a grade 2 sarcoma. She has a grapefruit sized lipoma in her left armpit which is impeding her movement and various other little lumpy appendages. We will be exploring options for treatment through a wonderful team of oncologists and surgeons. She may need her teeth cleaned as she has mild dental disease. We will also explore supportive care through an acupuncturist and a chiropractor.
In the meantime, sweet Penelope will be receiving lots of TLC and enjoying home comforts and the family life she has so missed.
We don’t know how many days or weeks you have left Penelope, but we are going to make them all count. You matter to us and you are SO loved!
Julia’s wonderful children are helping and loving Penelope as well, her son did the handprint saying what he was thankful for. What a fantastic family! We are honored to know them and have their help. Thank you
We will continue to post updates on beautiful Penelope…. stay tuned!
