Sully – ADOPTED!
Top 5 things I need:
A family who is home a lot.
Lots of love and attention. I think I’m a lap dog.
A yard with a fence.
A kennel – I like to sleep in it and it keeps me safe when I’m alone.
Someone to continue my training.
My name is Canvas but my foster family has been calling me Sully and I’m starting to recognize it as my name. I’m a 5 year old GSP and I was rescued from a shelter in New Mexico. They were going to euthanize me because they didn’t have the space and I had heart worm. Mile High GSP saved my life and I have been living with my foster family while getting my heart worm treatment. I have successfully completed my treatment and am cleared to resume all activity!
My foster parents say I’m a true Velcro dog, and I like to follow my foster mom everywhere. I’m anxious when she leaves for work even though I’m not alone. I whine and pace at first but I will settle in until she comes home. I am crate trained and that’s my preferred place to sleep. If I need to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, I whine to let my family know. I had a few accidents in the house at first, but I’ve been really good about waiting until we are outside. My foster family thinks I lived on the streets for awhile because I’m always hungry and will remind you when it’s time to eat. I’m working on staying out of the kitchen because I do like to counter surf. I’m working on my other manners, too. I have to sit when my foster mom puts my food bowl in the stand and I wait until she says it’s ok for me to eat. I am working on sit and stay. I sit on my own for treats but food is too exciting for me to pay attention to any other command. I have to be reminded of my manners when getting treats, but I’m doing much better. Since I was cleared for activity on 4/1, I’ve been exploring the yard and am working on coming back when called. I’m learning to walk off leash with an e-collar. The snow is finally melting and there are so many smells to explore.
I do have two human foster brothers. I do really well with the older one who is 10, he sits on the floor with me and I sit or lay on his lap. I am still a little unsure of the younger boy who is 8. I don’t like it when they leave, either. I like it best when all my pack is all together. My foster family thinks I would do best in a house with adults who stay home most the time. I just LOVE being with my humans. I don’t like it when they have left me home for a couple hours. When they are gone I stay in my crate and I have been destructive a couple times but mostly I bark while they are gone. I like to go with them when they go places and I’m learning how to ride in the car. I have tried to get in my foster moms lap while she’s driving so I am safer in the back behind a barrier. For really short trips, I am working on sitting in the front seat and how to lean when we go around a curve.
I do like to watch for critters. I notice birds when they fly by the window. I have seen some bunnies and squirrels, but deer are really interesting – so interesting that sometimes I forget I have to pee while I look for the deer that I saw once outside the fence. My foster parents don’t think I have hunted before. Recently I have been OK meeting 2 other dogs on walks but earlier I wasn’t able to socialize due to my treatment. I was only neutered 4 months ago, and have shown some dominant tendencies. My foster family thinks I would do best as an only do especially because I like to be the center of attention. I LOVE a Kong with food in it and I have recently started to play fetch with a frisbee (balls aren’t very interesting). I love to chase it and am learning to bring it back so we can play more.
I’m a good boy who loves to be with my humans and, if I trust you, I will let you rub my belly. I will also crawl in your lap if you’ll let me, all 70 lbs of me! My foster family tells me I’ve done really well keeping calm during the heart worm treatment, but now that I’m all better I get to be a dog dog! I’m a little rough around the edges but I have a big heart and am looking for the right family to give me love and continue my training.
